Installing the Acticheck companion app on an android phone

There are many different Android phones each running different versions of Android. The App uses a combination of the latest Android features and we can’t guarantee that the App will work resiliently on every phone.

For the App to work the phone would ideally be running Android 6.01 (Marshmallow) or above, although some (not all) instances of Android 5 (Lollipop) have been seen to work. On some phones you may need to close and re-open the App during the installation setup.

Once the setup is complete no further actions are required.

To install and run the App:

  1. Visit the Android Playstore from your phone.
  2. Search for ‘Acticheck’ and then click on the option for ‘Acticheck Companion App’.
  3. On the App page click ‘install’ and then ‘accept’ the permission requests.
  4. Wait until App has downloaded and installed and then press on  ‘Open’.

You should get a warning message with a link back to this page. Press OK.

The App now checks for permissions. It will prompt you to ALLOW and CHANGE these settings.

Android does not allow the App to automatically change the Battery Optimisation so this needs to be done manually.

Please follow this link and follow the instructions for your phone: dontkillmyapp.com

  1. You should now get a screen requesting the phone number the phone you are installing the App on.
The number must be in international format; for the UK this is +44 followed by your number without the leading zero (e.g. +44712333444).
  2. In a few seconds you will receive a SMS Text message with a 4 digit code which you should enter in the space provided to verify your number.
  3. Once verified you will see the App Settings screen. If not, select ‘Settings’.
  4. Click on ‘Pair Band’.
  5. Then click on ‘Scan’.
Whilst the phone is scanning an orange box will rotate.
  6. While the Phone is scanning hold your band facing upwards (orange towards the floor) and press and hold until a picture of an Acticheck wristband shows on screen (up to 10 seconds).
  7. Click on the picture of the Acticheck wristband.
  8. When asked ‘Do you want to save this band?’ click on SAVE.
  9. Click on the Back arrow (top left) which says ‘HOME’ next to it.
  10. Press a single button on the band for up to ten seconds. The icon under the wristband picture should turn to a tick (without a picture of a house) followed shortly by the globe. This shows that the wristband is now connected through the phone and will know in future to look for it if it cannot communicate through the base station.
A tick with a house means it is connected through the base station.

General phone settings

Though the app is now installed, manufacturers have developed different ways of managing apps to extend the battery life of their phones, this may involve closing an app that it thinks is not being used or restricting its access to key services..

However, making sure you adjust the settings on your phone to the following should enable your app to remain operational.

The graphics are taken from a Samsung phone, but other manufacturers should similar.

The app settings take up more than one screen so you may need to scroll through to find the menu items..

Checking permissions are correct

Click on permissions on the App Info screen. and then ensure that No permissions denied and Location is set to 'Allowed all the time'.
You can change these settings by pressing on the permission.
Once you are content with the App permissions, return to the 'App info' screen by clicking on the arrow (top left).

Ensure the permissions will not be revoked

On the 'App info' screen ensure the 'Remove permissions if app unused' toggle is turned off (to the left a greyed out, as shown).

Ensure Battery is set to 'Unrestricted'

From the App Info screen, click on Battery and ensure the Unrestricted option is chosen.

Turning it off and back on again

Occasionally, after installation or an update on the phone, it will be necessary to power down the phone and turn it on again to get the app working.

OPTION: The Acticheck app does not automatically restart when your phone is turned on. However, downloading ‘Boot Apps’ from the Playstore and adding ‘Acticheck’ to its list means our app will automatically start when your phone does.

We apologise for the additional difficulty, but this is beyond our control.
