Installing the Acticheck companion app on an android phone

There are many different Android phones each running different versions of Android. The App uses a combination of the latest Android features and we can’t guarantee that the App will work resiliently on every phone.

For the App to work the phone would ideally be running Android 6.01 (Marshmallow) or above, although some (not all) instances of Android 5 (Lollipop) have been seen to work. On some phones you may need to close and re-open the App during the installation setup.

Once the setup is complete no further actions are required.

To install and run the App:

  1. Visit the Android Playstore from your phone.
  2. Search for ‘Acticheck’ and then click on the option for ‘Acticheck Assure Companion App’.
  3. On the App page click ‘install’ and then ‘accept’ the permission requests.
  4. Wait until App has downloaded and installed and then press on  ‘Open’.

You should get a warning message with a link back to this page. Press OK.

The App now checks for permissions for Bluetooth, Location and Battery Power. It will prompt you to ALLOW and CHANGE these settings.
Android does not allow the App to automatically change the Battery Optimisation so this needs to be done manually.

You will need to ensure that the app is allowed to remain active even when your phone is in your pocket or bag. The way to do this varies by manufacturer, model and the version of Android that is running.

Please follow this link and follow the instructions for your phone:

  1. You should now get a screen requesting the phone number the phone you are installing the App on.
The number must be in international format; for the UK this is +44 followed by your number without the leading zero (e.g. +44712333444).
  2. In a few seconds you will receive a SMS Text message with a 4 digit code which you should enter in the space provided to verify your number.
  3. Once verified you will see the App Settings screen. If not, select ‘Settings’.
  4. Click on ‘Pair Band’.
  5. Then click on ‘Scan’.
Whilst the phone is scanning an orange box will rotate.
  6. While the Phone is scanning hold your band facing upwards (orange towards the floor) and press and hold until a picture of an Assure wristband shows on screen (up to 10 seconds).
  7. Click on the picture of the Assure wristband.
  8. When asked ‘Do you want to save this band?’ click on SAVE.
  9. Click on the Back arrow (top left) which says ‘HOME’ next to it.
  10. Press a single button on the band for up to ten seconds. The icon under the wristband picture should turn to a tick (without a picture of a house) followed shortly by the globe. This shows that the wristband is now connected through the phone and will know in future to look for it if it cannot communicate through the base station.
A tick with a house means it is connected through the base station.

For most Android phones the App will now work resiliently in the background. However some manufacturers aggressively put Apps to sleep to prolong the phone battery life. To make matters more complicated the way this is done varies according to the version of Android and the phone manufacturer.

Generally you can see and adjust the settings for the Assure app by finding the icon on your phone and then ‘press and hold’ it until an option is shown for ‘App info’, ‘App options’ or similar. Once there you should check that the following permissions are enabled:

  • location so a responder knows where you are
  • Bluetooth so your wristband can talk to the app
  • Mobile data, so the system can communicate with the wider world
  • Autostart should be enabled if your phone has an option for it.
  • Battery optimisation should be disabled for the Assure app to ensure it is not closed down when running in the background.

Some phones also have a general power saving mode and this should also be disabled. If your App works initially then stops and the settings suggested below do not work try Googling ‘Disable Battery Optimization’ for your model of phone.

Manufacturer’s quirks

Manufacturers have developed different ways of managing the turning off of Apps to extend their phone’s battery life.

If you have a Samsung phone we advise that after you have set up your app you should put it on your ‘Never sleeping apps’ list by:-

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll to ‘Battery and device care’
  3. Then click on ‘Battery’
  4. Then click on ‘Background Usage limits’
  5. Then click on ‘Never Sleeping Apps’
  6. Then click on the ‘+’ symbol at the top
  7. Scroll down until you see the ‘Acticheck Assure’ app.
  8. Select it by clicking on it and the tick should show next to it.
  9. Click on ‘Add’ at the bottom of the page.

Turning it off and back on again

Occasionally, after installation or an update on the phone, it will be necessary to power down the phone and turn it on again to get the app working.

OPTION: The Acticheck Life-Saving Wristband app does not automatically restart when your phone is turned on. However downloading ‘Boot Apps’ from the Playstore and adding ‘Acticheck Assure’ to its list means our app will automatically start when your phone does.

We would like to apologise for the additional difficulty but this is beyond our control.
